Hairspray got its dialogue from a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan. Actually it was this book that was written in inspiration to the John Walters' film. Made with geniuses of a variety of people, the hairspray musical enjoyed a Broadway production in 2002 and until it ended in 2009, it portrayed around 2500 performances.
